東京の中で下町の良さを残している街としては谷中、根津、千駄木が挙げられるが、谷中へ行く場合は日暮里駅が近い。

日暮里からは京成電鉄により成田空港へスカイライナーが出ているために、成田空港行きの乗降客も多く、また舎人ライナーの起点でもあり、日暮里は今後更に発展していくと思われる。

谷中の街歩きには、日暮里駅より夕やけだんだんを下って谷中銀座に入り、谷中銀座の商店街でメンチカツを食べながらよみせ通りから千駄木駅へ抜ける。

この後時間があれば千駄木駅から団子坂下交差点へ、団子坂下交差点より三崎坂を上って谷中墓地に出るルートが人気が高い。

Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street

When it comes to neighborhoods that still retain the charming atmosphere of Tokyo’s old downtown (shitamachi), Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi often called "Yanesen"—are top choices. If you’re heading to Yanaka, Nippori Station is the closest gateway. Since the Keisei Electric Railway runs the Skyliner directly from Nippori to Narita Airport, the station sees a lot of travelers. It’s also the starting point for the Nippori-Toneri Liner, so Nippori is expected to develop even further in the future.

A highly popular walking route through Yanaka starts at Nippori Station. You head down the famous "Yuyake Dandan" (Sunset Steps) and walk into the Yanaka Ginza shopping street, where you can grab a minced meat cutlet (menchi-katsu) to snack on. From there, you cut through Yomise-dori Street toward Sendagi Station. If you have extra time, a great extension is to head from Sendagi Station to the Dangozaka-shita intersection, walk up Misakizaka Slope, and end up at the peaceful Yanaka Cemetery.
